S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl (formerly ": Oblivion Lost") is an unreleased first-person shooter computer game. The game uses the "X-Ray engine" and features a theme based off an alternate reality, where a second nuclear disaster occurs at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station in the near future. The game is expected to have a non-linear storyline and feature gameplay elements such as trading and two-way communication with NPCs. The game is described as including some role-playing and economic elements.
In S.T.A.L.K.E.R., the player assumes the identity of a "stalker", or expeditioner, into "The Zone". "The Zone" is the location where the Chernobyl Power Plant melted down in 1986, contaminating the surrounding area for years.
The game is partly inspired by the book Roadside Picnic by the Strugatsky brothers.
X-Ray engine
The X-Ray engine is currently considered a next-generation first-person shooter graphics engine. The engine does not support software rendering.
