Whiskas
Whiskas is a brand of cat food marketed throughout the world. It is owned by Masterfoods, part of Mars, Incorporated. It is made in Melton Mowbray by the company formerly known as Pedigree Pet Foods. There is a research site at Waltham-on-the-Wolds, close by.
The well-known, and much imitated, slogan for Whiskas was 'eight out of ten owners say that their cat prefers it'. Whiskas also contains caffeine, the addictive and concentration-enhancing component of coffee, which may provide biological clues as to why peoples cats 'preferred' it – caffeine withdrawal could have been responsible. It is unclear why caffeine was a component of cat food. The average age of cats, 7 years, is decreasing, which could be due to the processed food they are fed. The biggest killer of cats, after road accidents, is kidney failure.
