WBRS

(Redirected from Wbrs)

WBRS is a student-run college radio station in Waltham, Massachusetts – just west of Boston. It is owned by Brandeis University, and broadcasts from the campus. WBRS broadcasts on 100.1 MHz FM and is limited to a 25 watt output on FM. When it was started in 1968 it initially broadcast on 91.7 MHz FM, but due to a change in FCC rules it was forced to migrate to 100.1 MHz FM in 1984. The limited power means it is a hyper-local station, heard mostly on campus and the surrounding city of Waltham. Good radios can receive the station as far away as Boston proper, though.

It is primarily staffed by Brandeis students and some community volunteers. It has a "block programming" format, meaning that the schedule is mostly fixed, with various different genres airing at different times during the day. For example, noon to 2 pm is (usually) the Jazz Cafeteria.

It also has a 15 year history of live music performances on the air. The Joint has aired weekly during the school year that entire time, save for a six-month outage when the studios were moved across campus in 2003.

There is no formal classroom setting associated with WBRS, however, all the management positions are held by students with annual elections by the WBRS staff according to the WBRS Constitution.
