Washington State University (also referred to as WSU or Wazzu) is a public research university in Pullman, Washington. It is the state's land-grant university. The main campus is in Pullman, located in Eastern Washington, with branch campuses in Vancouver, Spokane, and the Tri-Cities (Richland, Pasco, and Kennewick). The university has strong programs in communication, Pharmacy, engineering, and veterinary medicine.

History

Founded on March 28, 1890 as the State Land-Grant College, the school changed names to the State College of Washington in 1905, and, subsequently, in 1959, to Washington State University. As a land grant institution, the university has been trusted by the state since statehood with 190,000 acres (769 km²) of land for agricultural and scientific research throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Campus

The 620 acre (2.5 km²) Pullman campus is located on College Hill in Pullman, a college town which is notable for its hilly environment. Surrounding the campus and town are the rolling wheat fields of the Palouse.

Athletics

Washington State University is a member of the PAC-10 athletic conference.

Athletes, students, and alumni of the university are known as Cougars. An older nickname for the school is Wazzu. The official colors are crimson and gray.

The football team plays in Martin Stadium. An annual highlight is the Washington State University-University of Washington Apple Cup football game, with a traveling trophy between the two schools since 1900.
