The Wade Defense or Rat Defense is a highly transpositional opening in chess. It is characterized by the immediate 1.d4 d6. It is the 5th most common move in response to d4. The opening can transpose into several openings after 2.e4 the Philidor Defense with 2.e4 d5 the Pirc Defense after 2.e4 Nf6,the Robatsch Defense after 2. e4 g6 among others. Other possiblities include the Old Indian Defense, 2.c4 Nf6 and the King's Indian Defense after 2.c4 g6 3.Nf3 Nf6. Despite this there are unique lines such as 1.d4 d6 2.Nf3 Bg4.
