Vibe FM 101 traces its roots to a pirate radio station called 'For The People'. Soon after the station secured a legal licence to broadcast, it was acquired by the Chiltern Radio Group and was renamed Galaxy 97.2.
On September 4, 2004, the group won the UK's first regional licence and Galaxy 97.2 became Galaxy 101. Chiltern later sold the 97.2 licence to GWR.
In October 1995, The Chiltern Radio Group became part of Chrysalis Plc, who invested £1 million in Galaxy 101. The Galaxy brand was rolled out across England when Chryalis bought the Faze FM stations in North of England, which were broadcasting as Kiss 102 and Kiss 105–106, and rebranded them as Galaxy 102 and Galaxy 105–106.
Two opportunities to expand further came in 1998 when new licences were advertised by the Radio Authority, and Choice FM in Birmingham was put up for sale. In October 1998 Chrysalis won the North East licence after fierce competition and acquired Choice FM in Birmingham for £6m. Choice was rebranded to Galaxy on the 1st January 1999 and on 1st June 1999 Galaxy 105–106 in the North East was born.
Galaxy 101 was sold to Scottish Radio Holdings in 2002, who rebranded it as Vibe 101.
