The painted tongue (scalloped tube tongue, velvet trumpet flower, Salpiglossis sinuata) is an herb native to Chile which bears velvety flowers ranging in size from 1.5" (3.8 cm) to 2.5" (6.4 cm). The blooms are of either a violet or orange color, that have contrasting stripes along each petal. Of the plants in its genus, painted tongue is the one most commonly found in ornamental gardens, and a variety of different colors have been cultivated. It was introduced to the northern hemisphere in the 1820s.
It is considered an annual plant, and should be grown in complete sunlight. Plants can grow up to three feet (1m) tall.
