Velotype

Velotype is the trademark for a type of keyboard for typing text, known as a syllabic chord keyboard.

Contrary to traditional QWERTY type keyboards, on which a typist usually presses one key at a time to create one character at a time, a Velotype requires the user to press several keys simultaneously, producing syllables rather than letters. Because of this, a Velotypist can produce more text in a minute than on a traditional keyboard, as much as 140 words per minute.

Velotypes are often used for live applications, such as live subtitling for the hearing impaired.

It differs in its approach to phonetic keyboards also used for verbatim transcription, such as the Stenography system, which depend on phonetic codes representing speech. They are generally more difficult to learn than Velotype but trained operators can go faster, as high as 200 words per minute.
