Vakhtang III of Georgia
Vakhtang III (ვახტანგ III in Georgian) (1276-1308), from the Bagrationi dynasty, was king of Georgia in 1302-1308.
Appointed by the Ilkhan ruler Ghazan as a rival king to his brother David VIII in 1302, he controlled only the Georgian capital Tbilisi and part of the southern and eastern provinces of the kingdom. After an unsuccessful offensive against Davids guerillas, the brothers agreed to rule the kingdom jointly. However, Vakhtang spent most of these years as a commander of the Georgian and Armenian auxiliaries in endless Mongol campaigns, particularly against Damascus (1303) and Gilan (1304).
