Vulcan Air Defense System
The Vulcan Air Defense System (VADS) is a self-propelled automatic anti-aircraft cannon used the United States military. It is also known as the M163. The gun is a variant of the General Dynamics 20mm M61 rotary cannon mounted in most US aircraft since the 1960s.
This weapon system is the M113 mounted version of the Vulcan cannon, which was also deployed on a light trailer. These systems were the close-in gun adjuncts to the M48 Chapparall missile system. As the M163's radar is range-only, it was not suitable for night operations and was slated to be replaced by the Sergeant York DIVADS (Divisional Air Defense System), but that system was cancelled due to cost overruns. Eventually the M48 and M163 were both replaced by HMMWV and M2 Bradley carried stinger missiles, and no M163's remain in service.
