History
The regiment has its origins in the fÀnikor raised in the 1550s and 1560s. In 1615, these smaller units where organized into the Norrland Grand Regiment, and in 1624, this grand regiment was spilt into three regiments, one of those being the Westrobothnia Regiment. The regiment's soldiers were conscripted mainly from the provinces of Westrobothnia, Angermannia and Medelpadia. It was one of the original 20 Swedish infantry regiments mentioned in the Swedish constitution of 1634.
The regiment was officially raised in 1624. It was tenemented in 1696. It changed name to Westrobothnia Field Ranger Regiment, in 1829 and was split in 1841 into Westrobothnia Field Ranger Corps and Norrbotten Field Ranger Corps.
The unit was given the designation I 19, (19th Infantry Regiment) after a general order in 1816. When the regiment was split, its designation was changed to I XIX, and later to I 20. The regiment was renamed in 1892 back to Westrobothnia Regiment. It was garrisoned in UmeÄ and was disbanded in 2000.
