Utrecht (agglomeration)

The city of Utrecht and the surrounding cities, villages, and townships form an agglomeration in the middle of The Netherlands. The area is located in the province of Utrecht, and is part of the larger Randstad urban area.

The agglomeration has a population of about 580,000 people. (rough estimate based on data collected in 2001 through 2004). The following towns are commonly recognized as part of the agglomeration:

In the seventies and eighties, large residential areas were built in Nieuwegein, Maarssen, and Zeist. In the nineties, construction of new houses was concentrated in Houten and in the Leidsche Rijn neighbourhood.
