Urengoy gas field
Urengoy gas field is the world's largest natural gas field, with over 10,000 km³ in total deposits. It lies in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District in the Tyumen region of Russia, just south of the Arctic circle.
Discovered in June 1966 (first drilling hole hit gas on July 6, 1966), the field started production in 1978. On February 25, 1981, Urengoy produced its first 100 km³ of natural gas. From January 1984, Urengoy gas started to be exported to Western Europe. It continues to produce over 200 km³ of gas per year.
Urengoygazprom, a subsidiary of Gazprom, manages the production.
