Upper motor neuron

Motor neurons are classified as either upper motor neurons or lower motor neurons. The former connect the brain to the spinal cord. The latter connect the spinal cord to muscles.

Damage to upper motor neurons is indicated by spasticity and exaggerated reflexes. Damage to lower motor neurons is indicated by fasciculations, weakening of muscles, and muscular atrophy.
