Unseen examination

In the UK, an unseen examination is an essay test in school or college. The student is called upon to answer a question in detail based upon what they have learned. Americans have not heard of this phrase, with the exception of some reference in the Harry Potter books, and use the phrase "written examination", as opposed to "oral examination", which one often has to pass to get one's doctorate.
