Umaid Bhavan Palace
Umaid Bhawan Palace is a palace located at Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India.
Umaid Bhawan Palace is popularly called Chittar Palace by the local public, the foundation of this grand piece of architecture was laid on 18th nov. 1929 by Maharaja Umed Singh. Made on the Chittar Hills in South Eastern direction of the City, this palace took 16 years and one crore twenty one lac rupees for completion. The beauty of this building that it does not use any mortar or cement to bind stones together, all pieces are carved stones joined together by interlocking. The view at night is wonderful.
It was one of the last royal constructions, supposedly built to provide work for drought relief for poor villagers. Some historians argue that forced labour without money was used to make this beautiful palace. We may never know with certainity the exact facts.
Present status
Now it has been into 3 functional parts, one having a five-star hotel, one is the residence of the royal family and one has been opened for public where a museum displays few pictures, arms, swords, and other things used by the royalties have been exhibited. Opening timings of this museum are 10 AM to 4 PM, closed on sundays. The beauty of its swimming pool, dancing hall and grand lawns is appreciated by everyone who sees it. The clock museum, theatre, underground hospital and central hall also reflect their own timeless beauty. The palace has an area of 26 acres (105,000 m²), out of which constructed area is 3.5 acres (14,000 m²) and 15 acres (61,000 m²) have been devoted to lawns. This is the most expensive hotel at Jodhpur and this is one of the largest private houses in India
