Ulichs

The Ulichs (Uglichs) (Уличи, Угличи in Russian) were a tribe of Early East Slavs between the 8th and the 10th century, which inhabited the territories along the Lower Dnieper, Bug River and the Black Sea.

The Ulichs were struggling with the Kievan princes Oleg, Igor and Sviatoslav Igorevich for their independence. A Kievan commander Sveneld even tried to capture the city of Peresechen, the Ulich capital, around 940. The Ulich lands were finally annexed by the Kievan Rus' in the middle of the 10th century. Later on, the Ulichs and the neighboring Tivertsy had to retreat to the north due to the Pecheneg invasion, where they would assimilate with the Volhynians.

The Ulichs were last mentioned in a number of chronicles in the 970s.
