Geography

Tseung Kwan O is located in the Sai Kung district in the eastern part of the New Territories, but sometimes it is regarded as part of Kowloon due to its close proximity to the city.

Name

In Chinese Tseung Kwan (將軍) means "General", and O (澳) means "bay". Therefore, Tseung Kwan O literally means "The Bay of General".

The exact origin of the name Tseung Kwan O is unknown, but it is said to be named in honor of the General of the Ming Dynasty, who visited Tseung Kwan O at some point. Another theory is that the name was chosen in the 17th Century, when naval battles were fought against pirates from Japan at Tseung Kwan O.

History

Before the development of Tseung Kwan O, it was a fishing village, about 600 years old.

The New Town was developed in three phases:

  • Phase I – Hang Hau, Po Lam, Siu Chik Sha, Tsui Lam
  • Phase II – Town Centre North
  • Phase III – Pak Shing Kok, Tiu Keng Leng, Tai Chik Sha, Town Centre South

Transport

Tseung Kwan O is served by the Tseung Kwan O Line of the MTR metro system.

It is also connected by a well covered public bus and minibus network. Several main roads are connected to the city, which include:

Others

There is an industrial estate in the southeast of the area, which is the seat of an MTR depot, the future mass housing development Dream City and TVB.
