Trey Lorenz
Trey Lorenz (born January 19, 1969 in Florence, South Carolina) is a singer and songwriter. He is best known for his 1992 hit duet "I'll Be There" with Mariah Carey and serves as one of Mariah's background singers.
Trey began his career by touring with Mariah for her first promotional tour in 1990, for her debut album, 'Mariah Carey.' (although his vocals do not appear anywhere on the actual debut album). Trey's vocals would first be recorded for her 2nd album, Emotions, but it wasn't until his appearance on MTV Unplugged (in which he could be seen singing I'll Be There with Mariah) that he got his major break.
Due to the popularity of MTV Unplugged, Trey was offered a record deal and recorded his self-titled debut album 'Trey Lorenz,' which was released to positive reviews from music critics. Mariah and her main producer at the time,Walter Afanasieff even helped produce and co-write two tracks, "Someone To Hold" and "Always". Unfortunately, the album flopped with poor sales and Trey was dropped from the label.
After being dropped, Trey then decided to explore his options and could be seen recording background vocals for other singers like TLC, the late Selena, and Usher. He would not provide background vocals for Mariah's next three albums, Music Box, Merry Christmas, and Daydream. Trey returned to doing background vocals for Mariah's Butterfly album, and has been doing them since.
Trey has also toured with Mariah and has been a backup singer for her Butterfly, Rainbow, and Charmbracelet tours. On the Butterfly and Charmbracelet tours, he also sang "I'll Be There" with Mariah, while on Rainbow, he sang a medley of Thank God I Found You, and its remix, Thank God I Found You (Make It Last Remix) with Mariah.
Although Mariah has stated for almost 7 years, that there will be another Trey Lorenz album, he has failed to be signed to a new label, and has not publicly released any new music. He is however, signed to Mariah's imprint label, MonarC. Within Mariah's fanbase Lorenz has enjoyed a small following over the years.
Mariah Carey Meets Trey Lorenz
"I met Trey in February 1990," says Carey, "when I was working on my first album. I was recording a song called "There's Got To Be A Way," and one of the backup singers was friends with Trey and had brought him down to the studio for the session. I heard someone singing all the high, top notes with me and I'm like, 'Who is that?' I turned around and it was Trey. It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship."
