Tono, Iwate

Tōno (遠野市; -shi) is a city located in Iwate, Japan.

As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 27,121 and the density of 41.07 persons per km². The total area is 660.38 km².

The city was founded on December 1, 1954.

Kunio Yanagita gathered folk tales here and published Tōno Monogatari or The Tales of Tōno in 1910, which is known as one of the greatest works of Japanese folklore studies.

Transportation

It is accessed by three routes, they are numbered 283, 340 and 396. The bypass is under construction. And prefectural roads numbered 35 and 121. It will be accessed by a new by-pass which is under construction and is an expressway, the newly built Kamaishi Expressway linking the coast.
