Toki, Gifu

Toki (土岐市; -shi) is a city located in the Gifu prefercture in Japan. It is located on the Honshu island and lies on the Toki River.

History

During the civil wars in the Azuchi-Momoyama period (1568 – 1614) refugees from the city of Seto settled in Toki. These happened under the protection of the lords of Toki. A significant number of these refugeese were potters. Oribe ware for tea ceremonies was produced in Toki. The city is still noted for the quality of its pottery.

The city was formally founded on February 1, 1955.

Population

As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 62,700 and the density of 540.47 persons per km&sup2. The total area is 116.01 km².
