Ceduna, South Australia
Ceduna (32°07′ S 133°40′ E, Population: 2,300) is situated to the west of the junction of the Flinders and Eyre Highways, 786 km northwest of Adelaide, the capital of South Australia. Ceduna, at the northwest corner of Eyre Peninsula is the last major settlement before crossing the Nullabor from east to west. The name is a corruption of the local Aboriginal word Chedoona and is said to mean a place to sit down and rest.
The port at Thevenard, 3 km east, handles bulk grain, gypsum and salt.Thevenard is on the isolated Eyre Peninsula railway network, and receives several trains daily of bulk gypsum from the Kevin mine near Penong (60km west of Ceduna).
Ceduna is set on Denial Bay and the sandy coves, sheltered bays and offshore islands of the bay make it an ideal base for a beach holiday. There was a whaling station on St. Peter's Island during the 1850s.
Ceduna is in the District Council of Ceduna, the federal Division of Grey, and the state electorate of Flinders.
