The Water is Wide
The Water is Wide is a 1972 novel by author Pat Conroy. It is a fictional story based on his work as a teacher on the island of Yamacraw, South Carolina. Yamacraw is a poor, run-down island which has no bridges and little infastructure. The book discusses everything from the boat trips to and from the island, to the island people and their quirks, to his battles with the school board over things such as gas.
