Students' Union Officerships

United Kingdom

Students' union officers are invariably divided into two main types:

  • Sabbatical officers, who are paid for taking a year out to be, for example, President of the union.
  • Non-sabbatical officers. Generally these are termed 'executive members' or 'council members', although 'council members' need not be officers.

Generally an executive committee will include variants on the following:

  • President
  • Vice-President (Services) or Services Officer
  • Vice-President (Welfare) or Welfare Officer
  • Press and Publicity or Communications Officer
  • Entertainments, commonly known as Ents Officer
  • Academic Affairs or Educational Campaigns Officer
  • Women's Officer
  • LGB or LGBT Officer
  • Secretary
  • Equal Opportunities or Liberation Officer
  • Clubs & Societies Officer
  • Campaigns Officer

Canada

In Canada, the following executive officerships are common (though there are many variations):

  • President
  • Vice-President, University (or College) Affairs
  • Vice-President, External Affairs
  • Vice-President, Student Services
  • Vice-President, Finance
  • Vice-President, Administration (or Operations)

Often, one ore more of these positions are combined (e.g. Finance and Operations).
