Students' Society of McGill University

The Students' Society of McGill University (SSMU) represents the undergraduate student body at McGill University.

Council

SSMU Council is the legislative governing body of the Society. It is composed of elected representatives from all faculties, as well as from the First Year Committee of Council, various clubs and services, athletics, residences and student senators. The SSMU Council is empowered to make all decisions on behalf of the Society and also ratifies the actions of the executive committee.

Representation

The society is a founding member of the Canadian Alliance of Students Associations which represents them federally. Provincally they are members of La Fédération étudiante universitaire du Québec (FEUQ).

Services

SSMU funds a variety of cultural, ethnic, academic, and social clubs. It is the publisher of the weekly McGill Tribune.

History

SSMU was predated by the Alma Mater Society, which was in 1902–1903. The Society, however, had little responsibility and resources. SSMU was founded in 1908 by the McGill Debating Union. It was recognized as students' official representative body in the following year.
