Student Christian Movement
In each country, the Student Christian Movement (SCM) represents the ecumenical movement at work with University students. These national bodies are members of the international World Student Christian Federation (WSCF). The WSCF and SCM groups provide a context for young Christians from all churches and nations to meet.
The WSCF was established in 1895 at Vadstena Castle, Sweden by students from ten North American and European countries.
Key founders include John R. Mott (USA) and Karl Fries (Sweden).
Whilst national SCM groups vary, they have tended to foster liberal and progressive religious and social views amongst university students. SCM has been associated with the social gospel and Christian socialist movements and is generally part of the Christian left.
There is at times conflict with other conservative christian groups on campus, such as the parachurch/non-denominational InterVarsity Christian Fellowship.
