The Soviet Union competed, for the last time before its dissolution, at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. It was the twelfth time that the nation had competed, including three times as the "Russian Empire". The Soviet Union competed under the IOC country code URS.

Archery
After boycotting the 1984 archery competition, the Soviet team found itself unable to repeat its three medals of eight years earlier despite there being twice as many events. Vladimir Echeev won the nation's only archery medal, a bronze, though the Soviets did pick up 4 more top eight finishes.
