Soil amendments

A soil amendment is any of a class of materials which are used to adjust the soil for increased fertility. The classifications can be mineral, such as lime to "sweeten" the soil, to make it less acid ( or sour), fertilizers, to add depleted plant nutrients, or material, such as clay, peat, sand, or manures such as compost. Sometimes a soil inoculant is added for legumes.
