Skelmersdale

Location within the British Isles.

Skelmersdale is a New Town, located in the district of West Lancashire. As of 2004, it had a population of 41,700 [1].

The origins of the town date back to the Domesday Book, with a reference to Skjalmar's Dale. The old Skelmersdale was a mining town, The modern town was designed to alleviate the population pressure on nearby Liverpool and surrounding areas in the early 1960s. Affectionately known as 'skem' by the locals, and as 'scum' by most of the surrounding area, Skelmersdale shines out like a beacon amongst the deprivation of the west Lancashire countryside. The River Tawd flows through Skem.

Skelmersdale houses the corporate base and primary distribution centre for Matalan, the discount clothing store. The town's football team, Skelmersdale United plays in the North-West Counties League.
