Shut up

"Shut up" is a commonly used phrase by the public, similar to "be quiet", only angrier, meaner, more commanding.

It is most popular among children and teens though adults sometimes use it. In western cultures, "shut up" has become a bad habit, especially among children and that becomes clear, when you anaylze the words purely rather than converting it in "be quiet". As in that, shut, up just only means the close sometime upwards.

Its origin is probably unknown, but most likely to have originated in the United States, by children, the most populative users.

A more explicit form of the phrase is "shut the hell up" (STHU), or "shut the fuck up" (STFU). Similar phrases include "shut your mouth", or "shut your fucking mouth".

However, the phrase/term "Shut down", "Shut-down" or "Shutdown" is not used this way, being normally used to mean "turning off" something, but most commonly used for machines, especially computers.
