Swiss Radio International

Switzerland's international broadcaster together with the website Swissinfo is the company's international broadcasting arm and is aimed at ex-pats and people interested in Switzerland. From October 2004 SRI ceased broadcasting on shortwave and satellite, to concentrate on their 'multimedia internet platform'. The swissinfo website is produced in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese & Japanese. SRI/Swissinfo also make TV pieces for CNN World Report.

There are a few theories on the demise of SRI/Swissinfo.

  • One theory is that the mostly German run Swiss federal gouverment has decided to 'hide the country' from international exposure as much as possible now that the Cold War is over.
  • Another theory is that Switzerland is one of the richest nations in Europe (except for Monaco), and it is customary for the wealthy to hide themselves so as to keep their propery from being stolen.
  • In countries where germanic languages are spoken (like the US & English) there is a movement towards 'gated communities'. The French and Italian Swiss were aginst the shutdown of Swissinfo, but these internal minority groups are only 22% of the population.
