Sebastian Shaw, formerly known as the Black King, is a comic book supervillain in the Marvel Comics universe, and the leader of The Hellfire Club. He is a frequent antagonist of the X-Men. Created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, he first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #131 (1979).

Fictional biography

Shaw was born into an impoverished family, but became a millionaire by the age of 20 through his excellent business skills and ruthlessness. He became the head of Shaw Industries, a multinational corporation involved in munition production and defense contracts. He joined The Hellfire Club's Inner Circle, eventually becoming its leader, The Black King.

He was later deposed by his son, Shinobi Shaw, and even after Shinobi's fall has never reclaimed his role in the Hellfire Club for more than a very brief period of time.

Powers

Sebastian Shaw. Art by John Byrne.

Shaw is a mutant with the ability to absorb kinetic energy to increase his strength, speed, and stamina to superhuman levels. This makes him excessively difficult to defeat in battle, as every blow struck to him only makes him stronger. Unusual tactics must be used to defeat him, usually by incapacitating him or by attacking him psychically. He absorbs the energy of any blow (whether he is striking it himself or being struck). Without absorbing energy he is merely a strong ordinary human, but normally Shaw works to keep his strength at a superhuman level while awake.

Shaw's abilities can be overloaded by too great an influx of power, such as when he was once rendered unconscious by a lightning bolt cast by Storm. He can also be defeated if an opponent focuses on simply immobilizing him without striking him with significant force.
