Sauer

Lake formed on the upper Sauer/Sûre because of a dam

Sauer (German and Luxembourgish; in French: Sûre) is a river of Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. It is a tributary to the river Moselle. Its total length is 173 km.

The source of the Sauer is in the Ardennes in south-eastern Belgium, near Vaux-sur-Sûre. It flows eastwards and crosses the border with Luxembourg near Martelange. It flows into the artificial lake Lac de la Haute Sûre west of Esch-sur-Sûre. After Ettelbrück and Diekirch it reaches the German border. It forms the border between Luxembourg and Germany for the last 50 km of its course, a.o. along Echternach. The Sauer flows into the Moselle in Wasserbillig. Tributaries are the Wiltz, Alzette, Our and Prüm.
