Saar (1947–1957)

The Saar protectorate (1,000 sq. mi.) was a revival in 1947 of the French controlled League of Nations mandate that had been effective 19201935, and that after incorporation into the Third Reich was known as Westmark.

After World War II the territory returned to French control in 1947.

In general elections December 1952, a clear majority expressed their support for the parties who wanted to remain autonomous under France, although 24% cast blanc ballots in support of barred pro-German parties.

In 1954, France and Germany offered to establish an independent Saarland, but a plebiscite rejected this plan by 67.7%.

On October 27, 1956, the Saar Treaty established that Saarland should be allowed to rejoin West Germany, which it did on January 1, 1957.

The Saar territory competed in the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, and in the qualifying section of the 1954 football World Cup, but failed after coming second to West Germany but ahead of Norway.

Like in 19201935, postage stamps issued specially for the territory was used 19471959; see postage stamps and postal history of the Saar for details. Until 1959 the currency remained French Franc.
