Early Years
Ryan's first experience with acting was with the MBCTA in Melbourne, where he starred in the youth reportory production of 'The Purple Pumpernickel'. Ryan has fond memories of his time at the MBCTA, stating that 'MBCTA is the best training ground you can have'. After this, he also managed to appear in the shows, 'The Bob Morrison Show', and 'Round The Twist'. His first role in a feauture film was in the critically acclaimed film 'Say A Little Prayer'. He was also involved with the Victorian Police Department's Films For Schools Youth project for a while.
Before he was cast as Toadie in Neighbours, Ryan played the part of 'Cyborg' in episode 2,123. The Neighbours producers were so impressed with Ryan's gripping portrayal that when it came to casting the part of Stonefish's younger brother, they quickly thought of the young, talented and handsome actor who had so endeared himself to them a year before. Ryan leapt into the role with the zeal and vivacity that would become his trademark over the next decade.
Present Day
Today, Ryan is possibly the most recognisable face on Australian television (even when sporting a mask as 'The Lawman' in recent episodes of Neighbours). Ryan is one of the most popular cast members, as is evident from his frequent appearances on shows like 'Rove Live', 'The Big Breakfast', 'The Saturday Show', and 'Good Morning Australia'. Fans of Ryan are also delighted that he takes time out of his busy schedule to guide them round the Neighbours set in the behind the scenes show, 'Neighbours Revealed'. Ryan has often stated what a delight it is to appear on shows that give the fans an insight into how much hard work goes into producing every episode. He also enjoys giving interviews and responding to fans. His honesty and integrity is crucial to his appeal to his diverse and wide ranging fanbase. He always exudes enthusiasm and dedication in his approach to his work, which is why fans across the globe often rate him as their favourite actor of all time.
Though no official Ryan Moloney fanclub exists, there have been estimates that his dedicated fans number in the tens of thousands, or even hundreds of thousands.
In November 2003 Ryan tied the knot with his long term girlfriend Alison Hayward, although many say that Ryan is married to his work, such is his dedication to realism. Ryan is aware of his countless female fans, but was prepared to break their hearts for the woman he loves. "I hope they can come to terms with it", he says philosophically, "unrequited love lasts longest".
Awards and Nominations
In 2004 Ryan was nominated for a Golden Rose of Montreux award for Best Actor in a Soap, following what some regard as the pinnacle of his illustrious career in acting, though Ryan himself says that the best is yet to come. Although he did not win the award, Ryan was his usual modest self, saying graciously, 'The only award i need is the undying love and affection of my fans around the world. I do it all for them, not for the awards'.
Future
"I reckon I'm one of the luckiest blokes around," says Ryan about the soap that made him a household name. Disappointing a vast number of his fans, he has stated that he has no plans to produce a pop single at any point in the near future. He says that he plans to move on into production, seeing it as an exciting hurdle for him and a challenge that he is keen to take on.
Charity Work
Ryan is a tireless charity worker and philanthropist, selflessly giving his time and unbound charisma to charities such as Forgotten Children Rescue Foundation, despite his heavy workload and busy schedule. Ryan first got involved with the foundation through a fellow cast member, Andrew Bibby (who played Lance). He witnessed the difficulties facing children in the Phillipines first hand, after flying out to see for himself what kind of impact he might be able to make. Afterwards, he was profoundly altered by his experiences. "You see it on TV, and you just kind of go 'oh, that's really amazing, but it doesnt really kind of affect me', but when you're seeing it there and you're just like 'oh my gosh'. What do you do? How do you even help? Where do you start? So it just really changes you."
