Accommodation
Generally, accommodation is divided among three groups: single room & family sized motel rooms and a cabana, which more permanent members tend to stay in.
Single room and family sized accommodation tends to vary in furnishings to suit your needs, but are generally minimalist. Some rooms will contain bunk beds. Rooms are generally not equipped with airconditioning, but with ceiling fans. Single rooms normally do not have private bathrooms and it is necessary to share public showers in the same motel block. Do not expect television sets or other luxuries. While accommodation is appropriate, The Royal Varuna Yacht Club is not a comfort inn, but a serious club for those interested in socializing and sailing.
Rooms are divided in motel blocks, built behind the main reception area and extending across to the other side of the main road.
Facilities
The Royal Varuna Yacht Club is a club mainly for sailing, so expect the usual services you would expect of a sailing club (boat storage, boat repair and parking).
The RVYC has a beautiful secluded beach. If you walk along the beach, you will find rocky cliffs blocking one end and to the other a long empty beach that continues to the next distant hotel. As RVYC is secluded, the water tends to be clean and during certain months, you will find sea cucumbers in the water.
If you walk up from the beach to the main reception, you will find a beach bar, which is open on organized events and has a pleasant view. Boats tends to be parked on the grass to extends from the beach, but amongst them you may find a giant chess board for those in need of a fun break. There is a decent-sized swimming pool (including a small area for children and toilet facilities), which is elevated above the shore, so it can also serve as a pleasant lookout point for beautiful sunsets.
Finally, you reach the main reception area (the 'Club House'), where most of the socializing and official business occurs. On the main floor, you will find the reception desk by the front entrance. There is also a kitchen and bar. The rest of the area is filled with tables and chairs, for you to enjoy your meal, have a drink and generally mingle. I might add that it is particularly enjoyable to wake up early and watch the sunrise here, while listening to the wind and the clinging sound you get from the dangling ropes gently tapping the masts of yachts on the grass area. Next to the Club House is a "Kid's Club", for children to keep company and eat. On the second floor of the Club House, you will find some offices and a television area, for those of you who have brought videos along.
Activities
Sailing events are frequent and RVYC is a well respected club. Racing events occur most weekends and there are annual events with sailors from other parts of Asia.
It is possible to rent boats, if you do not have one of your own, and for those who are beginners, there are instructional courses.
History
The Royal Varuna Yacht Club is famous for having been bestowed Royal Patronage by H. M. the King. You can read more about the history in the link below:
Location
RVYC is located outside of the city, Pattaya, which is a popular tourist location. Pattaya is located on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand, about 165km southeast of Bangkok in the province of Chonburi. Pattaya is a rapidly growing city, which has a lot to offer, from lush beaches to night clubs to flashy commercial department stores. You will, of course, still find much local culture and is not completely diminished by tourism, as is the case in many places.
While RVYC is outside Pattaya, you can still easily get to the centre by Tuk-tuk or taxi. Other hotels exist nearby, but far enough that RVYC is surrounded by dense bush. You can also find other local amusements nearby, such as the water park, Pattaya Park, and kart racing.
