Rural Division

Prince Albert Rural School Division

In 1998 the urban and rural school divisions in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan merged. The new division created due to the merger is the Saskatchewan Rivers School Division #119 Before these two groups were completely separate divisions. There were six elementary schools and one main high school located within city limits. The high school WESMOR is actually an acronym for those six elementary schools.

Wild Rose School (Enrolled: 107)

East Central school (Enrolled: 106)

Spruce Home School (Enrolled: 138)

MacDowall School (Enrolled: 48)

Osborne School (Enrolled: 95)

Redwing School (Enrolled: 316)

WESMOR High School (Enrolled: 423)

Before the merger rural kids went to elemntary school until grade nine and then had to go to WESMOR. Today students can go to either Carlton Comprehensive High School, WESMOR, or PACI from the Saskatchewan Rivers School Division. They even have a choice to go to the Prince Albert Separate Catholic School Division high school St.Mary. Another new development was the transformation from WESMOR High School into a community high school. Wesmor is located right in the middle of residential neighborhoods. The residents in that neighborhood were not allowed to register for classes because WESMOR was designated for rural kids only. Today The school is open to everyone. A community high school goes deeper than that though. Due to the geographic location of the school and the standards of living there, the school got reclassified as a community school. Community schools get extra funding for social activities that are beneficial to people who live in low living standards. And the funding is still beneficial to students who are not in low living standards. (When I say low living standard I want it to embrace a whole set of difficulties youth face. Not necessarily just malnourishment on a subsistance level) Bringing together two completely opposite groups like rural and urban kids also creates a healthy diversity that most school might be lacking. A healthy dosage of being put in social diverse bodies definetly helps in communication, and has empathetic means.
