Ruhnu
Ruhnu (Swedish: Runö) is an island in Baltic sea, controlled by Estonia. Administratively, Ruhnu belongs to the Saare County. Ruhnu has less than 100 inhabitants. Travel to Ruhnu is by weekly flights from Pärnu and Kuressaare in winter, twice weekly in summer, and irregular ferry service.
After World War I, the island was allocated to Estonia, but up till 1945 it was populated by Swedes and traditional Swedish law was used. Swedish people ran away or were expelled by Russians and instead the island was repopulated by Estonians. The number of people never exceeded 400, and in 1970s, after a storm hit Ruhnu, most of people were relocated. Now after Estonia became independent land and homes were given back to the descendants of Swedish who once owned it, they didn't move back, but sometimes visit the land of their forefathers.
Ruhnu is one of most remote continuously inhabitted spots of European Union.
