Rugby League Tri-Nations

The Rugby League Tri-Nations is a relatively new concept for rugby league, though it can be seen as a logical continuation of the early world cup structure, in which the best teams in the world play in a round robin tournament leading to a final. The original world cup involved France, whose playing standards have since slipped, whilst additional teams also now take part. Great Britain also no longer compete in world cup competition, the Rugby Football League preferring to separate out the home nations.

The competition was undoubtedly inspired by the rugby union Tri Nations Series.

The first competition was held in 1999 in Australia and New Zealand. The second one was held in Great Britain. The format for the second competition has altered slightly, with each team facing each other twice prior to the final. Further Tri-Nations series are planned for 2005 and 2006.
