Royal Alexandra Theatre

The Royal Alexandra theatre
The Royal Alexandra Theatre is a theatre in Toronto, Ontario Canada built in 1907. Since 1963 it has been owned by Mirvish productions, the production company run by Ed and David Mirvish. The theatre, commonly known as the Royal Alex is named for Queen Alexandra, the wife of King Edward VII. The theatre received letters patent from the king, entitling it to the royal designation.

At the time of its opening, the Royal Alex was in an upscale neighborhood. The lieutenant-governor's mansion was nearby as was the original site of Upper Canada College and the mansion of Cawthra Mulock, who led the group which financed the theatre. Over the years, the area fell into decline becoming dominated by railway marshalling yards. When Ed Mirvish purchased the theatre its site was slated to be turned into a parking lot.

The Royal Alex is typical of 19th century proscenium stage theatres and is constructed in the Beaux-Arts style.
