Rose DeWitt Bukater

Rose DeWitt Bukater is the fictional heroine of James Cameron's 1997 blockbuster Titanic. She was played by British actress Kate Winslet, and the 101-year-old Rose was played by Gloria Stuart.

Both actresses were nominated for Academy Awards, Winslet for Best Actress in a Leading Role and Stuart for Best Supporting Actress nomination, becoming the oldest person to receive an acting nomination.

Rose was on a transatlantic journey from England to America in order for her to marry a man she did not love, just so her mother could become wealthy again. Since she did not love the man, she tried commiting suicide by jumping off the back of the R.M.S. Titanic, the tremendous vessel on which she was travelling. However, a young tramp, Jack Dawson saved her, and they fell deeply in love. But then the ship hit an iceberg and started to sink. The second half of the movie is crucial to Rose's character: It shows her standing up to her mother Ruth DeWitt Bukater and her fiance Caledon Hockley, and risking all to save Jack from the icy bowels of the ship. After the ship finally went under, she and Jack clung onto driftwood for hours before finally, Jack died of the cold. Heartbroken, she blows a whistle she finds in the water for help, and a lifeboat comes back for her. She lived the rest of her life doing the things that Jack and herself talked about doing, like riding horses in Santa Monica, California. She died at age 101 in 1996, just after telling some adventurers about her love affair with Jack.
