Rose (ship)

Rose was a modern tall ship, built at Lunenberg, Nova Scotia in 1970. She was a replica of HMS Rose, a sixth-rate frigate built in 1757.

Rose was inspected and certified by the United States Coast Guard. Among the safety features on the vessel are two diesel engines which can provide propulsion power in emergencies.

She operated as a sail training vessel in the 1980s and 1990s, run by the HMS Rose Foundation based in Bridgeport, CT, until 2001 when she was sold to the 20th Century Fox film studio to use in the making of the 2001 film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, in which she played the fictional Royal Navy frigate Surprise. After the film was complete, the ship was leased to the San Diego Maritime Museum to use as a static display. The lease expires in November, 2004.

The Museum re-named the ship Surprise.
