Rosalía Arteaga

Rosalía Arteaga Serrano de Fernández de Córdova is an Ecuadorian politician. She became Vice President in 1996, following the election of Abdalá Bucaram as President. On 6 February the following year, however, President Bucaram was declared unfit to govern by Congress. Fabián Alarcón, the Speaker of Congress, was declared interim president, but Arteaga challenged this decision in the Supreme Court. On 9 February, Arteaga became acting president, with Alarcón returning to the speakership of Congress. Arteaga's case was rejected by the Supreme Court, however, and Alarcón resumed his interim presidency on 11 February.
