Robert Vernon Smith, 1st Baron Lyveden
Robert Vernon Smith, 1st Baron Lyveden, British politician.
Son of Robert Percy Smith, of 20 Savile Row, London, and nephew of The Rev. Sydney Smith, Canon of St Paul's. Educated at Christ Church, Oxford (2nd class classics 1822). Married a daughter and co-heir of the Earl of Upper Ossory. A Lord of the Treasury November 1830 to November 1834. Secretary of the Board of Control, April 1835 to 1839. Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies, 1839 to 1841. Secretary at War, February-March 1852, and President of the Board of Control, February 1855 to March 1858. Liberal Member of Parliament for Tralee, 1829–1831; for Northampton, 1831 until he was created Baron Lyveden, June 1859. Died 10 November 1873.
A member of the Reform Club, the Traveller's Club, and Brooks's Club.
