Charmeleon (Lizardo (リザード Rizādo in Japanese, Glutexo in German, Reptincel in French) is a fictional character from the Pokémon franchise. Like its evolutionary relations, Charmeleon has a flame burning at the end of its tail; however, unlike its peaceful basic form, Charmander, Charmeleon constantly seeks battles, calming down only when it wins. Charmeleon can attack with its claws as well as its fiery tail, and can breathe fire when excited.

Name origin

Charmeleon's name probably comes from a portmanteau of "char" and "chameleon." Its Japanese name probably originates in a pronunciation of the word "lizard."

Availability

One can only get a Charmeleon in any of the Pokémon games by evolving a Charmander. Therefore, the availability of Charmander dictates the availability of Charmeleon.

Anime Appearances

When Ash's Charmander evolves into Charmeleon, its personality changes completely. It becomes a very disobedient Pokémon and only fights when it feels like doing so. It first showed its disapproval of Ash's instructions when Ash congratulated it on its evolution. At that time, it breathed fire onto Ash's face.

In the Pokémon movie "Voice of the Forest", Sammy Oak, the younger incarnation of Professor Oak, owned a Charmeleon that was notably more obedient than Ash's. It fought alongside Ash's Bayleef against the main villain's Sneasal and Scizor Pokémon.
