Risdon Vale, Tasmania

Risdon Vale is a small township in Southern Tasmania that is used primarily to house Tasmania's only maximum security prison, Risdon Prison and Risdon Women's Prison. Prior to the development of the prisons, Risdon was used as a tourist destination. Risdon Vale also houses a mental hospital, primarily for persons deemed to be criminally insane and a danger to society, which is a short distance from the prison. Risdon Vale has a population of approximately 3,000 persons and was at one point an outer suburb of Hobart.
