Risaldar
Risaldar (often called Ressaidar in the British Indian Army) is a mid-level rank in cavalry and armoured units of the Indian Army. The Indian Army has a unique set of ranks, which stand between a non-commissioned officers and commissioned officers. During the British Raj, they were known as Viceroy's Commissioned Officers (VCOs), but since independence they have been called Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs).
A Risaldar ranks above a Naib Risaldar (called a Jemadar in the British Indian Army) and below a Risaldar Major. Risaldars generally command squadrons. In other arms the equivalent is a Subedar.
