Chibi-Usa

(Redirected from Rini)
Chibiusa

Chibiusa (ちびうさ, also commonly rendered Chibi-Usa; formally Usagi Tsukino or Tsukino Usagi Small Lady Serenity(manga only)) is a fictional character from the manga/anime Sailor Moon. In the English-language adaptations, she is known as Rini.

Table of contents

Character Overview

She is the daughter of Usagi Tsukino and Mamoru Chiba, and was sent back in time to the "present" (late 1990s AD) to stay with them before she was born. Her real name is the same as her mother's, Usagi Tsukino, but the "Chibi" (meaning "little", but it can be read as "Junior". It literally means something close to "midget") is added to avoid confusion between the two. (Many Japanese children, Chibiusa included, would dislike being addressed by the somewhat childish prefix, although she is aware it's used with good humor.) Her name in the English-language version of Sailor Moon, Rini, is a contraction of "Serena", also the same name as her mother. She is known for having pink hair put into a unique style that resembles rabbit ears on top of her head.

Usagi is constantly fighting with her, and dislikes her because she is close to Mamoru. Chibiusa's affections come into conflict because she generally does not immediately identify Usagi and Mamoru as being her parents from the future, although she is aware of the fact. There is evidence to believe that Chibiusa prefers the 'current' Usagi more in a sisterly role rather than a motherly role because Chibiusa has no siblings and her mother has a different overall personality, being many centuries older than the present-day Usagi.

Important Anime Plotlines

Sailor Moon R

Chibiusa is transformed by "Wise Man" (actually a villain called the Death Phantom) into Black Lady—or Wicked Lady in the English adaptation—an older, twisted evil version of herself. It is up to Sailor Moon to change her back into the former version of herself.

Sailor Moon S

Chibiusa is sent from the future to train to be a Sailor Senshi. She becomes Sailor Chibi Moon (in English, Sailor Mini Moon) and uses attacks such as "Pink Sugar Heart Attack", which are often used as distraction tools rather than actual attacks.

Sailor Moon SuperS

She becomes involved with Helios (Pegasus), a winged horse that appears in her dreams.

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars

She teams up with Sailor Saturn to fight Nehelenia preventing Saturn from using the suicidal "Death Reborn Revolution" power. At the end of this storyline, the sixth episode of the series, she returns to the future and is never mentioned or shown again in the anime.

Important Manga Plotlines

Black Moon Arc

Chibiusa appears from the future, asking for the Maboroshi no Ginzuishou (Mystical Silver Crystal) to save her mother, Neo-Queen Serenity. Chibiusa also is named Chibiusa by Mamoru to keep the two Usagi's apart. (Her full name is Princess Tsukino Usagi Small Lady Serenity, when she becomes older she will become Princess Tsukino Usagi Lady Serenity. She does not have the surname of Chiba.) She later becomes Black Lady through a corruption of power. She also becomes a sailor Soldier in this arc, unlike the anime.

Infinity Arc

Chibiusa meets Hotaru and becomes friends with her. She learns how to use attacks and how to make friends. Her Ginzuishou is stolen by the Death Busters. She also acquires a new transformation and attack.

Dream Arc

Chibiusa gets a new transformation and attack that she does with Sailormoon. She discovers that she will become the leader of a future group of Sailor Soldiers—the Sailor Quartet.

Stars Arc

Chibiusa (Small Lady, technically) returns to the future to find that it is in ruin. She returns to the past with her Sailor Soldiers, the Sailor Quartet. They have a group attack of Pink Ladies Freezing Kiss, Saving Sailormoon and the Starlights.

Items

"Luna-P"- A robotic ball companion, which Chibiusa can command by saying the phrase "Luna-P Henshin!", meaning Luna-P transform, making it become the thing that she desires . In the English adaptation, Luna-P is called the "Lunaball" or "Luna-Sphere" with the transformation phrase "Luna Sphere Kitty Magic!" This sphere can also produce objects for her to use, such as a sleeping potion or any type of weapon. Luna-P is also used as her communicator to the future with a blurry figure appearing in its eye that turns out to be Sailor Pluto.

In the manga, Luna-P is shown to be replaced by her Moon Rod used for her "Pink Sugar Heart Attack"; in the anime, the fate of Luna-P isn't shown as she has the rod already when she first reappears. In the SuperS anime and Dream arc of the manga, her rod becomes the Crystal Carillon.

Crystal Time Key- a key used to travel through time which was given to her by Sailor Pluto. In the Sailor Moon R, it is shown to have the ability to distort gravity as well.

She also has the Stallion Reve, an object that allows her to communicate with Helios.

Moon Birthmark- This is shown to have some power (which, in the anime, is later revealed to originate from the maboroshi no ginzuishou of the future) and appears on her forehead when she is in trouble.

Chibi Moon Locket 1- Used to transform Chibiusa into Sailor Chibi Moon

Chibi Moon Rod- Used in the Pink Sugar Attack

Second Locket- The locket used to transform her into Super Sailor Chibi Moon

Chibi Moon Kalidescope- Manga only object used to attack enemies in Double Rainbow Moon Heartache.

Crystal Carillion- a bell-like object used to call pegasus

Chibi Moon Tier – a manga only object used to attack.

Pink Moon Crystal- a manga-only object that is an evolved form of her maboroshi no ginzuishou. It also helps transform her into (Eternal*) Sailor Chibimoon

  • The name of this transformation is debatable. Some people call it Star, instead.

Fandom

Fan opinions of her character, both positive and negative, can be quite vocal. Chibiusa's extended inclusion in the series, particularly the anime's "SuperS" series, is thought to have directly and indirectly affected the quality of that season. However, Chibiusa's close, selfless friendship with the depressingly lonely Hotaru Tomoe is generally considered to be her best trait. Chibiusa is also frequently considered more mature than Usagi, despite their ages.

Rini is sometimes negatively called the "Pink Spore," the common nickname given to her by an irritated Serena in the American dub. The nickname "Spore" is sometimes used with reversed affection, due to Chibiusa's younger age relative to other characters (some estimates put her physical age in the range of six to eight years old).

Although in the anime she always looks the same and never grows up, in the manga, if you look at a picture of her in the beginning, and then look at her again in the StarS manga, her body has definitely changed. Her true age is over 900 years old, but her age at the end is unknown because of no true time reference being avaliable in the manga. Her true age is never mentioned in the anime, or at least not the dub. Although in the "Rini's Picture Diary" in the second StarS manga her age is 902.

In fanfiction she is often paired up with Helios, Peruru, or sometimes Hotaru.
