Redneck Riviera

The Redneck Riviera is a colloquialism for a stretch of the Gulf Coast of the southern United States that is known for its resorts and widely considered to have some of best beaches found worldwide. For many years, the beaches were also deemed to have the whitest sand in the world but recent hurricanes in the 1990s and 2000s have necessitated the addition of grayish or beige-colored sand, something that has angered residents of the area. Over time, the sands will bleach white again in the sun, perpetuating the beauty of the area.

The area of coast is roughly bounded by Mobile, Alabama on the west and Panama City, Florida on the east.

Some people find this term offensive. See "Redneck."

This area is also referred to as the Emerald Riviera, or the Emerald Coast, for its stunningly green-colored water, which is due to the algae content of the waters reflected off the sugar-white sands of the area.

Panama City Beach, Florida also claims this as a nickname.
