Red Cross Nordic United World College

The Red Cross Nordic United World College (RCNUWC) is the ninth and second-youngest member to the family of United World Colleges. Patrons of the college and the movement include Nelson Mandela, Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan and Thor Heyerdahl. The movement was established by the German Educationalist Kurt Hahn to promote international understanding and peace. Most of the colleges have about 200 students from more than 60 countries. Students are selected only on merit and generally receive full scholarships.

RCNUWC is located on the remote shores of Flekke Fjord in the municipality of Fjaler, Western Coastal Norway. The college enrolls 200 students from more than 80 nationalities, also from SOS Children's Villages and refugees. After the two year education following the guidelines of the International Baccalaureate Program students usually go on to higher education. Despite its high academic standards, the school does not focus on academics, but seeks to find a balance between studies and activities.

Activities that are offered at the college include climbing, kayaking and hiking, but also an economics society, a tai-chi activity and diverse language and sports activities. The college also raises political awareness through weekly presentations on political issues that are open to the whole community. Further, the college participates in aid projects and works very closely together with the local Red Cross. Together with its neighbours, the Haugland Rehabilitation Center, the students offer activities to visiting schools for one year in a project called Leiskule.
